Columbia University Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital neurosurgeons work hard not just to provide excellent patient care but also to find new and better ways of treating neurological disorders such as Parkinson disease. Now the Parkinson’s Foundation is recognizing Columbia’s work by designating the hospital a Center of Excellence for Parkinson care.

As a Center of Excellence, Columbia will join 42 other leading academic and medical centers worldwide that work together to perform cutting-edge research and provide exemplary patient care for Parkinson sufferers. Together these centers serve more than 100,000 people with Parkinson disease.

Parkinson disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nearly a million people in the United States. It causes loss of motor control and tremor (shaking), as well as symptoms such as depression and anxiety. As the disease progresses, it may cause some patients to stop and “freeze” in midstep, sometimes resulting in falls.

At Columbia’s Center for Movement Disorders Dr. Sameer Sheth and Dr. Guy McKhann provide state-of-the-art treatment for these symptoms, and they are spearheading research into better ways to manage the disease. Together they have been investigating the use of deep brain stimulation to alleviate depression in Parkinson sufferers. They are also working on a long-term research project that studies how Parkinson disease affects decision-making processes.

Dr. McKhann and Dr. Sheth have also teamed up with spinal cord stimulation specialist Dr. Christopher Winfree on a project to improve reaction time and mobility in patients with Parkinson disease, a project that could help keep patients from “freezing” while walking.

The Parkinson’s Foundation was formed in 2016 when the National Parkinson Foundation and the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation merged. The foundation’s mission is to invest in scientific research that will end Parkinson disease and to improve the lives of patients with Parkinson disease. Columbia is proud to be part of the Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence network, as well as part of the worldwide cutting-edge research effort to end the disease.
